It’s that time of year when the art world converges on the small but vibrant 9 mile long barrier island known as Miami Beach!
What is Art Basel?
Art Basel originated in Switzerland in 1970 and is arguably one of the most popular art fairs worldwide. The art fair has expanded and evolved to include locations in Paris, Hong Kong, and the only U.S. based Basel in Miami Beach. The Art Basel Miami Beach event has grown immensely from its start in 2002. As a result, the fair provides an incredible platform for established and emerging artists to exhibit their work, for galleries to make deep connections, and for collectors to discover works all in one plentiful art filled week.
Art Basel Miami Beach is not just an art fair; it’s part of Miami Art Week, a cultural juggernaut of parties, VIP events, connections, art appreciation, and of course art collecting. Additionally, if you’re attending because you’d like to learn how to become an art collector, Art Basel and Miami Art Week have a place for you.
Black at Art Basel
However, let’s talk about the black art side of this phenomenal art fair. Black artists continue to exert an impact on this international stage.
Historically, Black artists have faced challenges in gaining representation and visibility within the art world. In an effort to chip away at this imbalance Art Basel implemented the Black Art Experience (B.A.E.) now in its 7th year. Coupled with Art of Black Miami (which runs concurrently with Basel) they have become spaces where Black artists are not only recognized but also celebrated.
Visitors have the opportunity to engage with visual art from the African Diaspora that sparks conversations and challenges preconceptions. Works include powerful paintings, photography, sculpture, films, music, and fashion. Artist’s works may explore themes of identity, race, love, family, politics, history, cultural heritage, and more. Expect to see visual art on display that provides a unique lens through which to view oneself and the world.
Black Artists in the Forefront
All things considered, Art Basel Miami Beach continues to evolve as a platform and the inclusion of Black artists has enriched the experience for attendees, offering a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of contemporary art. The contributions of Black artists at events like Art Basel Miami Beach/Miami Art Week play a crucial role in shaping the narrative and fostering a more equitable and diverse cultural landscape.
One final note: We advise that you venture beyond the Island and the convention center to discover sister events and exhibitions throughout the greater Miami area. Experience the transformative power of expression, innovation, and art community.
